College Prep Workshop for Veterans
Veterans Upward Bound is offering 3 free college prep workshops for veterans enrolling at Montana State University in Bozeman.
- Workshops are available in introductory computers, college math and college writing.
- Each workshop will provide a condensed 4-hour academic refresher with follow-up tutoring available during the semester.
- All materials required for the classes will be provided by Veterans Upward Bound.
- There is no charge for the workshops or tutoring, but veterans must participate in the workshop to be eligible for any tutorial services.
Workshop Descriptions:
An Introduction to Computers:
This workshop is designed to introduce basic computer skills essential to college success. It will begin with a review of Microsoft Windows including accessing resources on campus, new features, and file management. Participants will learn the fundamentals of using Microsoft Word to create, edit, print, and submitting documents to your instructors. Online resources will be provided to improve keyboarding skills.
An Introduction to College Math:
This workshop will begin with the definitions of the different sets of numbers introduced at the beginning of any college Algebra class: Natural Numbers, Whole Numbers, Rational Numbers, Irrational Numbers, Real Numbers, Complex Numbers, and how to identify which set(s) a number belongs to. An explanation of the real number line and how it is used will be followed by a condensed review of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. Other topics to be included as time allows: the Order of Operation; Associative, Commutative and Distributive Laws; and Properties of Exponents.
An Introduction to College Writing:
This workshop will begin with a quick review of English grammar, sentence structure and mechanics in preparation for writing for academic purposes. Guidelines for writing effective paragraphs and longer essays and papers will be presented. Writing samples will be examined to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as understanding the different purposes of a writing assignment (informative, compare/contrast, persuasive). This workshop will explain how to approach a writing assignment, including the basics of research.
