Compass Preparation Program

The Compass assessment is a placement test used by colleges and some training programs to evaluate incoming students' levels of math, writing and reading. The goal is to use the results to place students in classes matched to their skill level. VUB's two week Compass Preparation Program is designed to quickly refresh math and writing skills in preparation for taking the Compass assessment.

Pre-College Program

Veterans Upward Bound provides basic skills development in academic areas required for successful completion of a high school equivalency or admission to post secondary education programs. VUB offers short-term remedial or refresher classes for veterans who are high school graduates but have delayed pursuing a post secondary school education. Course offerings include:

  • Algebra/Mathematics
  • College Success
  • Computers
  • Foreign Language
  • Personal Finance
  • Writing
  • Science

Other services include:

  • assistance with applications to the post secondary school of choice
  • assistance with applying for financial aid
  • personal counseling; academic advice and assistance
  • assistance in securing veterans services from other locally available resources

TABE Learning Assessment

The TABE test is used to provide a solid basic for effectively assessing the skills and knowledge of adult learners. TABE is an academic assessment that measures a person's grade level in reading, mathematics, and language. TABE tests provide a flexible system of diagnostic assessments and instructional materials to meet the diverse needs of today's growing adult education market.

Career Exploration

The Career Assessment Inventory compares an individual's occupational interests to those of individuals in specific careers that reflect a broad range of technical and professional positions in today's workforce. The inventory is used by guidance counselors to help students and adults develop career and study plans, and by psychologists and human resource professionals to advise individuals on career development.

Veterans Benefits

Eligible students may use their GI Bill Educational Benefits while enrolled with Veterans Upward Bound. Students enrolled at Flathead Valley Community College, Great Falls College, Helena College and Missoula College are able to receive up to of their benefit. Students enrolled at MSU-Billings are able to receive up to 100% of their benefit. VA benefits are based on instructional clock hours.
